I won't use the word devastated, but I will say I'm extremely disappointed...
I've rested my knee all weekend. Iced. Compressed. Elevated. And it still hurts like hell when I bend it. The pain is on the left side of my left knee and also in the inside joint of the knee. At night, it swells. In the morning, it aches. And I just don't know what to do. I don't want to hear what the doctor is going to tell me. And being a cancer mom, I really don't want another nasty medical bill. *sigh*
Stalemate, right?
Last week was a bevy of activity. I strength trained my arms & core, swam like a fish a couple of days, and put in 40 miles on the bike (both at the gym and on the road.) My knee held up, but it's just super sore when I bend it. The first five miles of every bike ride (and any standing I do on hills) hurts like hell. Aside from that, I'm fine except for bending, mornings, and nights. (Yes, I'm a justifier.)
I have 20 days. 20 short days until I'm supposed to ride 100 miles in one day in honor of my sweet boy's cancer battle. And I haven't been able to train properly in 10 days thanks to this injury...
I'm freaking out just a little bit...
What would you do if you were me?

If I were you I would continue RICE'ing (rest, ice, compression, elevation) a few times a day. If you are able to take Motrin for inflammation I would do that do (they say Motrin tops Tylenol in this category) and take a few days off from cycling (continue swimming - that's a hardcore workout). Trust me, two weeks out you are more than ready for this ride. I had daily freakouts leading up to my century but you've worked hard and CAN do this!
oh Sarah...how devastating. I feel your pain...well not all your pain...I ditto Steph.. RICE it and don't strain it anymore...pool thing is an awesome idea to keep you moving....and I hate to say it but you may need to get back to doc to make sure you haven't hurt something more. hugs girl! good luck!
I'm so sorry! :-( Sending you good mojo! I'm sure that someone will have the right advice for you. All will be well, I feel it! <3
I echo what Steph above said. Continue to RICE - and swim, swim, swim. You ARE READY. You will be GREAT! BUT, if you keep pushing the knee it will get worse, and then you will be sunk. Give it time. It's HARD, but you have to do it...
If I were you I'd use my blog to vocalize my discontent with the situation and even whine a bit about it. As grown ups we don't really get to in the real world but we sure do feel it when these things put a damper in our intentions! Let us help prop you up!
And like Steph said, keep on with RICE. Take it as easy as you can in efforts to save energy and resources for what really matters - that ride.
And I know how ugly medical bills can be, but it's best to suck it up now instead of possibly letting it get worse and leading to harder things to fix - and more bills to boot.
Remember, these things usually are a way of our bodies telling us to slow down or chillax a bit. It's ok to put your feet up. I have no doubt you'll successfully conquer that ride in 20 days. But listen to your body right now. These messages are not meant to be taken lightly...
And finally...
((((HUGS))))
I know you don't want to, but maybe you should take a few days off your leg. Sit around, lift some weights....but seriously-don't mess around. You need healthy knees for the rest of your life!
I am so sorry =( Feel better soon sweetie!
I agree with all of the above comments. Take your time recovering from this injury. I know your "deadline" is just a few weeks away, but like another commenter said, you need your knees for the rest of your life. Don't overdo it because you're excited when it starts to feel better, or you could set yourself back even farther. Knees are tricky joints and I've been dealing with mine since an injury at 17 with improper recovery. Life's not a race, even though it feels like it. <3 ya!
